Children Need One-on-One Time with Parents & Grandparents

Parents and grandparents want their children to love and appreciate them!

Frequently the goal of parents is to provide a better life for their children than what “they” had. Too often we measure success in material things. I have witnessed parents make self-sacrificing decisions in order that their children would have meaningless things like designer clothing or a “new” car upon their 16th birthday. While this is a noble objective, it is not complete.

Evening meals at the dinner table is a wonderful application of quality time with family where interaction brings togetherness. There children learn about their family members and their place within the family unit. But, one-on-one time is equally important!

Children often have an abundance of energy and it can be trying to spend meaningful time when they won’t sit still. Sadly, many parents give up too easily and delegate electronic media as a babysitter. One way to address this issue is to regularly schedule specific times as time together. Children love to learn! One way you can have a meaningful time together is to play games together that require interaction and learning.

At bedtime, reading a wholesome story (with a happy ending) or perhaps a story from the Bible is a good way to spend quality one-on-one time. If you want your children to love God’s word, you can show them that you love it by sharing-it-with-them!

Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Raising a child properly is much more than suppling for their physical needs. For proper development, children need to interact with their parents and their grandparents as well. Children need-to-feel-loved! Who better to nurture this emotion than their parents and grandparents? Since parents and grandparents desire to be loved and appreciated by their children, “teaching” them how to love is the key! If you spend quality one-on-one time with them, they learn from you…
